In Latin is where the etymological origin of the word is found.
Specifically, it comes from the word vita, which in turn emanates from the Greek term biographies. They all mean precisely life.
The concept of life can be defined from different approaches. The most common notion is linked to biology, which holds that life is the ability to be born, grow, reproduce and die.
In this sense, life is what distinguishes men, animals and plants, for example, story objects like a rock or a table.
Life is also the state of the activity of organic phenomena and the internal force that allows those who possess it to act. Another way of interpreting life is linked to the ability of a human being to manage their internal resources and adapt to the changes that occur in their environment.
When we see a man walking or a dog running, it is unquestionable that we are before beings with life.
On the other hand, at the best time for when and when life ends Religious questions are mixed with science to affirm (or not) that life begins from the first moment of fertilization, which amounts to an affirmation that the Abortion is unfailingly a murder (ending a life). Other positions that can be in their early stages.
Something similar happens with death. The irreversible interruption of brain activity is equivalent to the end of life, even if the person continues to breathe.
In this sense, we have to make it clear that there are many ways in which a person's life comes to an end. However, when this happens voluntarily on that part it is because he opted for suicide. The problems of staff, work or family are often the most frequent causes that lead someone to make the decision to end their existence.
However, we can not forget that there is another term closely related to life and death. We refer to euthanasia. This can be defined as the action carried out by a person with the aim of avoiding suffering.
That is to say, that person is waiting for the death of that being that is suffering painfully.
You can do it with the consent of the patient or simply by personal decision.
Euthanasia is one of the issues that have generated the greatest controversy in the world, establishing two opposing sectors: those that defend it and those that reject it completely.
In the first case, they argue that it is a synonym of dignity with respect to human life, while those who oppose consider it an attack against the inviolability of life.
Retrospective view of the concept of life.
Traditionally, life has been an abstract concept and, therefore, diffuse and difficult to define. For this reason it used to be defined in opposition to non-life or inertness, especially alluding to differentiating properties. What confused most were the viral structures, which do not share all the most common properties of the rest of the living structures. Likewise, the border between life and death was not clear, making it difficult to determine when exactly the latter occurred.
Given the confusion at the time of defining life, it was decided to do so based on the results obtained after the complete development of the DNA, and not with respect to the potential of that molecule, so that some common characteristics were established:
Living beings require energy. That is, they are nourished.
Living beings grow and develop.
Living beings respond to their environment.
Living beings reproduce by themselves, without needing external help; this being a key fact.
These characteristics pointed to a definition of life so simple that allowed to include as living beings, for example, mineral crystals, which grow, respond to the environment, reproduce and of course consume energy to grow and spread. It was necessary, then, to look for other characteristics of life beyond purely intuitive ones.
The universal definition of life was considered as something more complex and difficult. Different definitions were offered, and it was a matter of pleasure to consider one or the other as good, as can be seen in the Definitions of Life section. In any case, the concept of life has followed an evolution parallel to that of the science that is dedicated to its study, biology.
